love it!
By vanessa jimenez
i actually found this book but for base at a garage sale, when my friend told me it wasn't for violin i ordered this one. i love how it gives you exercises and breaks things down for you, it's helped me and i definitely recommend it to someone who is just beginning to learn to play the violin! seeing as that i never payed attention in music class when i was a kid, thinking that i wouldn't want to learn to play an instrument anyway, this book has helped me in remembering the strings and how to read sheet music. the basic stuff at least.

Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination, by Neal Gabler

The definitive portrait of one of the most important cultural figures in American history.

Walt Disney was a true visionary whose desire for escape, iron determination and obsessive perfectionism transformed animation from a novelty to an art form, first with Mickey Mouse and then with his feature films–most notably Snow White, Fantasia, and Bambi. In his superb biography, Neal Gabler shows us how, over the course of two decades, Disney revolutionized the entertainment industry. In a way that was unprecedented and later widely imitated, he built a synergistic empire that combined film, television, theme parks, music, book publishing, and merchandise. Walt Disney is a revelation of both the work and the man–of both the remarkable accomplishment and the hidden life.

Amazon.com Review
Neal Gabler's meticulously researched biography, Walt Disney offers the full story (Gabler is the first writer to gain complete access to the Disney archives) of the American icon. Readers will discover the whole story, witnessing Disney's invention of a "synergistic empire that combined film, television, theme parks, music, book publishing, and merchandise." What fans don't know could fill a book (this book in fact), and we asked Gabler to point out a few of the juicy bits. Read our interview with him, and his "10 Things That May Surprise You" list below. --Daphne Durham

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Neal Gabler

Q: Why Walt Disney?
A: When you write about someone as grandiose as Walt Disney, you may tend to get a little grandiose yourself, so forgive me. But I had always set the task for myself to examine the forces that helped define American culture in the twentieth century and those individuals who might be regarded as the architects of the American consciousness. Walt Disney was certainly one of those forces and one of those architects. His visual sensibility is arguably one of the two most important in the last century, along with Picasso's, yet Picasso has received dozens of biographies and Walt Disney had, when I began, not received a single full-scale, fully-annotated biography. I wanted to fill that gap in our cultural studies. I thought that if one could understand Walt Disney, one could go a long way to understanding American popular culture.

Q: One thing that strikes you when reading the book is that Walt Disney never had any money. With all his success how is that possible?
A: It is astonishing that Walt Disney was always--and I do mean always--in dire financial straits until the opening of Disneyland. The primary reason wasn't that his cartoons weren't making money, because they were--at least until the war in Europe when the loss of that market meant disaster for the features. But even as they were making money, the studio was losing money because Walt was constitutionally incapable of cutting corners, enforcing economies, laying off staff. The only thing about which Walt Disney cared was quality. He thought that quality was the way to maintain his preeminence, though quality also had the psychological advantage of letting him perfect his world. The problem was that quality was expensive. To cite just one example, Walt spent more than a hundred thousand dollars setting up a training program for would-be animators, though even then the return was small because Walt was so picky that very few of the candidates actually qualified to work at the studio. Money meant very little to Walt Disney. It was only a means to an end, never an end in itself.

Q: When did Walt first conceive of the idea for Disneyland and what were the initial reactions to the idea?
A: It is very difficult to determine exactly when Walt hatched the idea for Disneyland, though he seems to have been thinking about it for a long time, at least since the early 1930s. Certainly by the time he was taking his daughters, Diane and Sharon, to amusement parks on Sunday afternoons in the late 1940s, he had formulated the idea to establish a park that was clean and wholesome and where parents wouldn't be afraid to take their children. The original plan was to build the park on a plot adjacent to the studio in Burbank, where there would be a train, a town square, an Indian village and kiddieland rides, but as Walt's ideas expanded, so did the need for a bigger plot. As for the reactions to his idea, Roy was initially reluctant, as usual, and Walt's wife, Lillian, was firmly opposed, though she had also been opposed to his making Snow White. Still, Walt exaggerated the opposition as a way, I think of elevating his own foresight and determination. In fact, as the plan grew closer to realization, corporations sought to be included as lessees, and even banks, that had been skeptical, became more receptive. When the park opened, it was an instant success.

Q: What do you think has been Walt's most lasting impact/legacy on American culture?
A: One could answer this question in a dozen different ways depending on one's priorities, but I think his largest bequest is a matter of the American mind. Walt Disney helped change the national consciousness. He got people to believe in the power of wish fulfillment--in their own ability to impose their wills on a recalcitrant reality. That's what Walt Disney did all his life. He managed to replace reality with his illusions--what some people now refer to disparagingly as Disneyfication. He sold us on the idea of control because Walt Disney was himself a master of control. We see the results everywhere--from film to theme parks to virtual reality to virtual politics.

You Don't Know Disney: 10 Things That May Surprise You

1. He is not frozen. His body was cremated, and his ashes are interred at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California, near his studio.
2. Mickey Mouse's original name allegedly was Mortimer but Disney's wife Lillian objected because she thought it too "sissified."
3. Some of the names originally considered for the dwarfs in Snow White were: Deafy, Dirty, Awful, Blabby, Burpy, Gabby, Puffy, Stuffy, Nifty, Tubby, Biggo Ego, Flabby, Jaunty, Baldy, Lazy, Dizzy, Cranky and Chesty.
4. Walt Disney suffered a nervous breakdown in 1931 and descended into depression after the war, concentrating his attention on model trains rather than on motion pictures.
5. Fantasia was the result of a chance meeting between Walt Disney and symphony conductor Leopold Stokowski at Chasen's restaurant.
6. During World War II the Disney studio became a war factory with well over 90% of its production in the service of government training, education and propaganda films.
7. The studio stopped production for six months on Pinocchio because Walt felt the title character wasn't likable enough. During this time he devised the idea of introducing Jiminy Cricket as Pinocchio's conscience.
8. Walt Disney received more Academy Awards than any other individual--32.
9. Disney modeled Mickey Mouse on Charlie Chaplin and that Chaplin later assisted the Disneys by loaning them his financial books so they could determine what kind of proceeds they should be getting from their distributor on Snow White.
10. MGM head Louis B. Mayer once rejected the opportunity to distribute Mickey Mouse cartoons shortly after Walt had invented the character because Mayer said that pregnant women would be frightened by a giant mouse on screen.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Few men could be said to have as pervasive an influence on American culture as Walt Disney, and Gabler (Winchell) scours the historical record for as thorough an explanation of that influence as any biographer could muster. Every period of Disney's life is depicted in exacting detail, from the suffering endured on a childhood paper route to the making of Mary Poppins. The core of Gabler's story, though, is clearly in the early years of Disney's studio, from the creation of Mickey Mouse to the hands-on management of early hits like Fantasia and Pinocchio. "Even though Walt could neither animate, nor write, nor direct," Gabler notes, "he was the undisputed power at the studio." Yet there was significant disgruntlement within the ranks of Disney's employees, and Gabler traces the day-to-day resentments that eventually led to a bitter strike against the studio in 1941. That dispute helped harden Disney's anticommunism, which led to rumors of anti-Semitism, which are effectively debunked here. At times, Gabler lays on a bit thick the psychological interpretation of Disney as control freak, but his portrait is so engrossing that it's hard to picture the entertainment mogul playing with his toy trains and not imagine him building Disneyland in his head. 32 pages of photos. 100,000 first printing. From Bookmarks Magazine
Neal Gabler, who penned a well-received biography of journalist Walter Winchell and An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood, among other books, is the first writer to have complete access to the Walt Disney archives. Much of that wealth of information makes its way into this hefty tome. At nearly 900 pages (including 200 pages of notes), the author risks losing all but the most devoted Disney fans. Gabler uses engaging prose, numerous anecdotes, and firsthand accounts of the events of Disney's life, however, to balance the more mundane details about production budgets and the day-to-day workings of Disney's empire. For the most part, Gabler succeeds. The book works best when he focuses on Disney's often contradictory and mercurial character.

Look Auntie! They're Paying me to Draw Pictures! They're Paying me to Draw Pictures!
By Nancy Beiman
Walt Disney has become a legendary character of the twentieth century. So much was written about him, and so much was inaccurate, that the legends often attained a currency that was not deserved. How many times have we heard that he was frozen? Gabler (who was the first of Walt's biographers to work with rare Disney family records) opens the book with this statement (it's not true.)

The truth is much more interesting than that.

Disney was an optimistic, hardworking go-getter with an astounding capacity for concentration who fell in love with the early twentieth century's high technology--motion pictures. Motion pictures drawn by hand.

He had the perseverance to start over again every time he failed artistically and financially. And fail he did. This is one of the most unlikely success stories ever told, since the Disney Brothers studio was working in a marginal field (animation) in a minor city (Kansas, then Hollywood, when the animation studios were all in New York), and attempting to make it as an independent producer just as the big studios were forming, eliminating independent competition in all but a few areas by 1928.

He made it because he had the unfashionable idea that quality would out, he had a tremendous amount of luck and he knew how to make appealing entertainment(Mickey Mouse was NOT the first successful character he created). Disney also had a real genius for hiring talented people. A surprising number of remarkable artists started with him in Kansas City, others were trained right on the studio lot.

Mr. Gabler's book is readable and contains much new information. Who would have thought that Charlie Chaplin was, at one time, Snow White's Prince? Chaplin, one of the few independent producers left by 1936, loaned his books for MODERN TIMES to the Disneys to help them ask fair prices for their landmark feature. For Disney's weak spot was running the business--he once actually forgot to add on the profit to the budget for a job in Kansas City, and was forced to work for cost of materials, with no salary for him or his animators! The 1941 strike by his artists was seen as a personal betrayal--but this strike can be predicted when you read about that early project. The Dream was the goal but (as an old cartoon states) coal is still somewhat important. Disney had his head in the clouds, and his brother Roy, who played the father's role to his sibling since childhood, was a major reason why Walt's feet were kept on the ground. It was a fine parntership and this is really a dual biography.

The truth about Disney is not sensational or scandalous--just refreshing after decades of inaccuracy and outright fabrication that somehow passed for fact.

The weakest part of the book is Gabler's attempts to psychoanalyze Walt's obsession with animation production as a desire to control his world. Of course he controlled his world. This is what all artists do. We animators love creating characters that APPEAR to think and move for themselves. They are really just an expression of our own sentiments and desires; we create life. That's what animation means. It's wonderful being able to control every aspect of the film's production-to be leading man, leading woman, and sets as well! Disney is hardly exceptional in this respect and the psychological insights don't ring true for me.

As one other animator told me, Disney was remarkable because 'he was the only man in the world who ever got 500 artists to work together in one building without KILLING each other!"

Not exciting but lots of data - and many errors...
By Hans Perk
Having collected and read about Walt Disney and animation for 30+ years, I found that the only proper way to read Gabler's biography is as follow-up to the great book by Michael Barrier, "An Animated Man", also available on Amazon. Barrier gives the structure of Walt's life as centered on Walt's true loves: his animation and his parks. While Barrier's book is a very pleasant read, and gives insight in what made Walt tick. As a contrast, Gabler recites data as if it was a class in Latin and represents Walt as a kind of nut. Gabler clearly neither likes nor understands Walt. He also has no knowledge of--or love for--the medium of animation, and he keeps talking of Walt's "animations," an expression that is only used by people who have no idea what they are talking about. But he did have access to the Archives, and thus some things are only to be found in his book. There are many, many factual errors in Gabler's book. A huge list can be found on Barriers's site (Google "GablerErrata"). And as a final note, on that same site, one can read that Diane Disney Miller herself thinks the Gabler book is a gross misrepresentation of her father (Google "Diane_On_Gabler"). So buy both books, read Barrier first, then Gabler, and then make up your own mind!

It was never really about the money...
By J. Green
...well, almost never. Walt Disney was always more interested in "the next thing," and making money on a venture was usually just a way to finance his projects. Initially drawn to drawing and animation but burned by dishonest partners, he created his own studio to produce animated "shorts" - short Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony cartoons shown before regular feature movies. But he was always pushing for better animation and better quality, eventually creating "Snow White," the first feature-length animated movie, with the best quality animation for the time. But even then, he wasn't breaking even and eventually had to cut corners just to pay the bills, and some movies were made purely to generate income ("Dumbo" and some of the live-action movies). As Walt became bogged down in the studio and trying to make too many movies at once and always striving to create something bigger or better (realism in "Bambi" and high-class art in "Fantasia"), plus with WWII forcing him to rely on government work just to keep going, he became discouraged and turned his attentions elsewhere. As a result, the animation that was once the top in the industry lost it's edge, and Walt became more interested in trains and eventually television and Disneyland. In the end though, Walt left a legacy of memorable characters and family-friendly entertainment.

A very enjoyable biography about one of the most influential people of the 20th century and our present-day culture, although it often bogs down in too much detail about finances. I was surprised that he was always financially strapped and borrowing wherever he could until after Disneyland. But it was especially interesting while reading the book to go back and watch some of the movies, like "Three Little Pigs" and "Snow White" (which I had never really cared for before) and compare the styles, knowing what went into them and what made them great. I even visited Disneyland after reading about it in the book, and noticed some of the details I hadn't before. It certainly gave me a new appreciation for some of the Disney movies, even if he wasn't particularly involved in some of my favorites. But I was also surprised to learn that the genius behind "the happiest place on earth" usually wasn't a very happy man himself. Mr. Gabler describes Walt's constant need to create "control" in his surroundings that drove his efforts at perfection. Animation, his trains, and Disneyland each in turn provided his escape from reality into an environment where he had near-total control.

Most books about Walt Disney either paint him as a saint or an evil tyrant, and I guess he was both. Gabler is careful to point out where the "legends" were embellished, and that "Walt Disney" became more of a brand than a man, but in my opinion he portrayed him fairly and honestly. He didn't shy away from his faults, telling about his ego and the complaints many of his employees had, but he also honestly tried to tell why he did what he did and what motivated him. In the end, if you're looking for a book that only tells the good things or only the bad things, this book will leave you a bit disappointed. But if you want a fair biography that not only documents his numerous accomlishments but shows that he was as human as all of us, I think you'll enjoy this. I did.

When a magic fly grants Arthur Crandall three wishes, he's not very impressed, especially since he doesn't believe in magic flies. So he's not particularly careful about what he wishes for: a new toaster, a solution to the bullies down on the street corner, and, for his third wish . . . let's just say that life on Davenport Street will never be the same for the Crandalls. The creator of the critically acclaimed Friday Night at Hodges' Cafe and Metropolitan Cow now brings us a tour de force in humor and storytelling. Egan has created an inviting world on Davenport Street where Stella and Arthur Crandall, two good-natured dogs who have an incredible, magical experience and react much as youor I would - with a combination of disbelief and willingness.

Kindergarten-Grade 3. Arthur Crandall's life turns topsy-turvy when a bumbling fly offers to grant three wishes and the urbane canine gives flip responses. Deadpan delivery, with droll watercolors that suit the tale to a tee.

From Booklist
Ages 5^-7. Egan is one of the most interesting author-illustrators around, always trying something new and quirky. This time, the story is about a dog couple, Arthur and Stella Crandall. Arthur keeps burning the toast, so when an annoying fly tells Arthur he will grant him three wishes if he puts down the fly swatter, Arthur wishes for a new toaster, for the nasty crocodiles on the corner to turn into squirrels, and for a trip to a tropical island where the natives sing and dance all day. Well, the fly doesn't get it quite right. The toaster turns into a squirrel, and the crocs turn into toasters, but the natives sing and dance ad nauseam on the tropical island. Happily, magic brings the couple back home again, where they are able to enjoy their new toaster (formerly a crocodile). There's nothing predictable here, either in the meticulously rendered watercolor art with its deco edge or in the hilarious story. Some of this has an adult feel, but it hits its target audience, too. Ilene Cooper

From Kirkus Reviews
Stella and Arthur, a couple of dogs, live on Davenport Street. Theirs is a humble existence: They eat--Arthur burns the toast every morning--go for walks, sleep. ``It was a nice life. Not perfect, but nice.'' The flaw is that a gang of unruly crocodiles taunt them on their morning walk, e.g., ``Hey, lady, what did your husband give you for your birthday, a flea collar?'' A fly in the kitchen, begging Arthur not to swat it, is the bearer of three wishes. Arthur, incredulous, humors the insect and the wishes come true, sort of. Egan (Metropolitan Cow, 1996, etc.) casts ordinary Joes into dreamlike, absurdist situations--with a hint of menace--that are quelled by a good dose of common sense and plain speaking. Home is where the burnt toast is in this original and zany offering. (Picture book. 4-8) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Tasty Toast!
By A Customer
"Burnt Toast on Davenport Street" has become a mantra in our house! This wacky book which we originally took out of the public library (and didn't want to return) has become an all time family favorite for it's droll sense of humor, vivid illustrations, and rather bizarre plot. My seven year old insists on a reading every night before bed. We do have a toaster that frequently misbehaves especially for "Dad" so that might be part of the charm but...You have to read this if you are between the ages of 5 and 11! Not since "Yucka, Drucka, Droni" has a book so captured our imagination.

WHAT A WONDFUL, QUIRKY BOOK. LOVE THIS ONE!
By D. Blankenship
This is probably one of the most original works I have had the pleasure of reading in some time now. It is just down right quirky! For some reason I was instantly able to identify with Arthur Crandell and his world. I have read this particular work to several of my third grade classes and it keeps them absolutely enthralled during the whole reading. The author is certainly blessed with a strange and wonderful imagination and it comes out in this droll text and even more droll illustrations, which, by the way, are absolutely a delight. The colors and situations are very, very detailed and yet simple. If you care to find out just how detailed they are, have a pack of third graders go over each picture with you pointing this and that out! The story moral is quite simple...be careful for what you wish for, you might just get it, is classic. This is certainly one you need to find and add to your library. I highly recommend this one.

Burnt Toast on Davenport Street is delicious!
By Rebecca Brown
Now I love burnt toast & its smell brings back all sorts of memories! Tim Egan has created a funny & telling little story of a couple of dogs in their happy &, well, almost dull lives. The only fly in the ointment is the gang of crocodiles who jeer & taunt them as they take their stroll around their neighborhood.
With delightful pictures & a tongue-in-cheek humor, Tim Egan, once again, gives us a charming, instructional parable on the old saying: be careful what you wish for!....END

THE BOOK YOU MUST READ
By Delia Sellers
This book, THE SECRET OF HEALING, like all the books written by Dr. Jack Addington is plainly written but profound in content. One chapter is titled THERE ARE NO INCURABLE DISEASES WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND THE CREATIVE LAW. That sums up Jack Addington's strong belief in the Power which is at the heart of everyone. This book takes you beyond the appearance of dis-ease to the cause behind it. It takes the focus from the illness to the "stuff" that is going on unseen, and leads one to know that there is a solution, if we are willing to change the thought patterns that have led to this situation. I heartily recommend this book to all who are in need of comfort and healing.

Oxford Handbook of Medical Dermatology (Oxford Medical Handbooks), by Sue Burge, Dinny Wallis

Although skin conditions are common and affect people of all ages, little time is available for dermatology in the undergraduate curriculum. Junior doctors feel unprepared when faced with patients with skin conditions and most are unsure how to reach a diagnosis or plan management. The Oxford Handbook of Medical Dermatology provides accessible and practical advice that meets the needs of healthcare professionals working in hospitals. It will also be of value to those working in the community, and to medical students.
This book focuses on medical rather than surgical dermatology. Highly illustrated and in full colour, it covers the common skin conditions seen in all branches of medicine, the cutaneous signs of systemic disease, and the art of making a diagnosis. The problem-based approach and the pocket-size make the book an invaluable bedside tool. Readers are led through the necessary steps in order to reach a diagnosis at the bedside.
Chronic skin diseases are disabling and embarrassing. This handbook promotes a patient-centred approach and good communication, and clinicians are encouraged to use simple quality of life measure to evaluate the impact of skin conditions on the patient.

Well designed ... portable and provides the basic foundation for diagnosing skin diseases ... Medical students will find this handbook useful. It is reasonably priced and offers a logical framework for deciphering and managing what can be a puzzling task for the nondermatologist confronted with a patient with an obvious skin disorder. Dry White Season, by Andre Brink

As startling and powerful as when first published more than two decades ago, André Brink's classic novel, A Dry White Season, is an unflinching and unforgettable look at racial intolerance, the human condition, and the heavy price of morality.

Ben Du Toit is a white schoolteacher in suburban Johannesburg in a dark time of intolerance and state-sanctioned apartheid. A simple, apolitical man, he believes in the essential fairness of the South African government and its policies—until the sudden arrest and subsequent "suicide" of a black janitor from Du Toit's school. Haunted by new questions and desperate to believe that the man's death was a tragic accident, Du Toit undertakes an investigation into the terrible affair—a quest for the truth that will have devastating consequences for the teacher and his family, as it draws him into a lethal morass of lies, corruption, and murder.

Horrifying that these things actually happened
By Global Prof
This is supposed to be one of the classics of South African literature, so I was eager to get acquainted with it. It's set during the time of the Soweto riots, during apartheid. I got about a third of the way through it, and then had to give up. The violence was too vivid and sickening. The cruelty was too upsetting. No matter how brilliant the writing, I just couldn't bear the graphic details of horror enough to continue. I thought the Nazis were bad. Learning just a tiny bit of what took place during those troubled times in South Africa makes Nelson Mandela's pardoning of his torturers an act of unbelievable grace.

Dry white season.....an important work on apathied
By Roger B
A beautifully written work which reinforces the horror of apartheid, and the indignity that all subjected to this system endured. This book reminds us of the unspeakable tragedy that this system visited on one lovely black South African family, but this tragedy must be multiplied several million times over to grasp its pervasive impact. The determination of the father figure to challenge the huge implacable system, speaks volumes for human potential.
The white south African main character serves to demonstrate the painful harvest that is garnered by anyone who speaks out against injustice of any kind....South Africa continues to provide the world with an excellent laboratory for the examination and review of human relations at its worst and it's best.

Enthralled by a Dry WHite Season
By Elizabeth C
Andre Brink's writing is descriptive and concise which gives it powerful impact. One Afrikaner man who loves his country, is complacent in his job as teacher and yet has to eventually take blinders off when his Black gardener's son is gone missing. We read how Ben's belief in the fairness of the 1970's justice system is slowly eroded. Amidst the student riots of Soweto, He moves out of his comfort zone & take great risks.Like some of us in America, once you know a terrible truth you can no longer do nothing. I like that Brink shows in multiple instances, from the landscape to the people to the politics that everything is not "Black or White" in Apartheid; So-called criminals fall in a grey area and family is not always who you thought or would like them to be.In the final analysis, Ben Du Toit makes the ultimate sacrifice as he follows his conscience.

The Biblical Metanarrative: One God - One Plan - One Story, by Bill Jackson

The Biblical Metanarrative traces the storyline of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. It is the triumphant story of God ruling as king over his realm. He does so for his own glory in an all-out war with Satan and his rival kingdom of evil. The key to God's ultimate victory is the incarnation of his Son, his life as the perfect human, his atoning death, and his resurrection, as the first fruits of those who will receive new bodies fit for life in the new Creation. Jesus' followers are currently living out Christ's commission to them to give every ethnic group the opportunity to repent and receive the holy and empowered life of the Spirit of God. This presentation's uniqueness is its selection of the stories that drive the narrative forward and the uncovering of the divine logic that connects those stories to make a sweeping whole, showing One God, One Plan, and One Story.

Tell the bible story in as few or many words as you need.
By Richard Landerman
Bill "Jax" Jackson teaches us with this book how to tell the story of the bible (whole or in part) in queue at the grocery store, over half an hour at the coffee shop, in a sermon, or over several days giving lectures at seminars.

Big Picture
By Greg Carlson
Bill Jackson accomplished what he set out to do--draw out the metanarrative of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. I would have liked to have seen this keyed more tightly to the kingdom of God. I believe that a distinction needs to be drawn between the messianic kingdom of God and the spiritual kingdom of God. I also believe that the distinction between the millenium and the new heaven and new earth needs to be more sharply focused. Outstanding
By David Fitzpatrick
Bill Jackson has done an outstanding job of giving a clear picture of the Biblical Metanarrative. It is easily understood and he does an excellant job of showing how everything fits together.
