Beverages, both hard and not, were highly prized; when sailors were threatened with the loss of their daily grog ration, near mutinies occurred. Beans, hardtack and some sort of meat in a bowl. I dont know how the Civil war lasted more than a few days. Fascinating read with recipies...its more than just beans.
